The biggest and smallest cricket grounds

Every one of the 122 grounds on this site, ranked by playing area — the ellipse enclosed by its straight and square boundaries. The largest is Gabba in Brisbane at 20,098 m². The smallest, Bready Cricket Club in Bready, encloses 9,158 m² — 46% of it, and 10,941 m² less grass to defend.

Playing area and boundary length are not the same ranking. The deepest straight boundary belongs to Bellerive Oval at 81 m and the shortest to Eden Park at 52.5 m; square, it is Gabba at 85.3 m against Molyneux Park at 50 m. A ground can be long down the ground and tight square, or the reverse.

These are the extremes of this dataset, not a claim about world cricket as a whole. Grounds we do not yet hold are not in the ranking, and the two kinds of figure below are not measured to quite the same edge of the field.

Two kinds of figure in this table. 100 of these 122 grounds were measured here from satellite imagery; the other 22 are figures published by the ground or its governing body.

The two are not measured to quite the same edge of the field, so a satellite-measured ground and a published one can look closer in size than they really are. Comparing grounds of the same kind is sound. Comparing across the two is not, until every ground has been re-measured on one basis — work that is under way.
